VILLENA, MEDIEVAL LOVE CAPITAL
Villena celebrates its XIII Medieval Festival on the 7th, 8th and 9th of March: music, fire, shows, handicrafts, cuisine... ¡and even real medieval weddings!.
Your first surprise once you arrive at El Rabal Medieval Festival will be the very original wedding parade. Because, believe it or not, only during this magical weekend, can couples celebrate their weddings in a very different way, by the Atalaya Castle (a real 12th century fortress). Here, the bride, groom and even their guests will be dressed in medieval clothing, making their fairy tale wedding even more realistic, even the rings are delivered by a falcon. his year four couples will be married during the festival, something very unique in Europe.
These four weddings and the Festival itself take place in the El Rabal neighbourhood, an Arab district of narrow streets and old houses that are decorated by the neighbours especially for this occasion. Here, we find street musicians, dancers, magicians, jugglers, archers, chess masters and even belly dancers who sway hypnotically to the music, fire eating, and entertaining teatrical plays. Not forgetting the colourful medieval market with more than 160 artisan stalls with vendors from all over Spain.
Besides, visitors can enter the spectacular Atalaya Castle, climb Santa Maria church's belfry or discover the amazing Treasure of Villena, which dates back 3.000 years.
This unique festival is organized by El Rabal’s neighbours as a way to promote Villena’s Old Town heritage, declared of Cultural Interest.
